John McDermott
Former National Apartment Association’s General Counsel
John enjoyed a career as a trial lawyer first as an Assistant U.S. Attorney and later in private practice with law firms and later as a sole practitioner. He has tried more than 100 cases before juries and thousands of non-jury matters as well. Most of John’s practice consisted of representing clients referred by other lawyers who admired his work ethic and professionalism.
One of those cases involved the defense of an employment dispute with a trade association. As a result of his success in that case, the National Apartment Association asked John to serve as its general counsel, a position he held for over thirty years.
Through his role as General Counsel, John met and worked with rental housing professionals throughout the country. He also filed lawsuits on behalf of NAA members and appeared in various appellate courts on issues of importance to owners and managers of rental housing.
John conceived the idea of challenging the CDC eviction moratorium as a violation of the Fifth Amendment. He recruited his friend, Chip Magid, and the resources of the Dorsey law firm in that effort.
